When “3000K” does not look the same.
Colour consistency is a project decision, especially when fittings sit side by side.
A colour-temperature label is a starting point.
Nominal CCT describes a target colour appearance. It does not guarantee that two unrelated products will look identical in a finished room. The optical system, surface being lit, output level and the light source all affect the impression. Review the actual products together when continuity matters.
Specify the relationship between products.
Identify the fittings that appear in the same view, such as a joinery strip beside a downlight or a linear run made from several reels. Ask the supplier to confirm the colour-consistency information for those exact models. Keep the approved sample as a reference for the project.
- Record CCT and colour-rendering requirements per application.
- Check colour consistency information where the manufacturer publishes it.
- Evaluate the complete profile and diffuser, not only the bare strip.
- Discuss batch continuity and the replacement strategy before ordering.
Review a sample under useful conditions.
Place the sample near the real finishes and evaluate it at the intended brightness. A highly reflective stone, timber veneer and coloured wall can each change the visual impression. Record which configuration was approved, including the diffuser and control setting, rather than retaining an unlabelled sample.
Plan for future changes.
A later extension or replacement may come from a different production batch. Preserve model codes and source documents in the order record, and ask about practical spare requirements for the project. This creates a clearer path than trying to identify a strip after it has been installed for years.
Common questions
Does a high CRI guarantee an identical colour appearance?
No. Colour rendering and colour consistency describe different aspects of the light. Review both where the project requires them.
