Matter is the beginning. Plan the rest of the system.

Start with how the room should work.

A useful smart-home brief describes everyday actions: a wall switch at the entry, an evening scene, an occupancy event or a scheduled change. List which functions must continue to work without a phone. This makes it easier to evaluate a complete solution instead of collecting individually compatible devices.

Matter and the network are separate decisions.

Matter provides a shared application protocol for compatible products. The device still needs a supported network transport. A Matter over Wi-Fi controller joins the Wi-Fi network. A Matter over Thread device requires a compatible Thread border router as part of the system. Confirm the model, firmware and controller ecosystem rather than relying on a Matter logo alone.

• Name the home ecosystem and the Matter controller.
• Record whether each device uses Wi-Fi or Thread.
• Check the required features in the selected ecosystem.
• Confirm network coverage at the installed location.

Lighting still has an electrical specification.

A smart LED controller does not replace the need to match the strip and power supply. Check voltage, channel arrangement and maximum channel current against the exact model. A tunable-white strip and an RGBW strip need different output arrangements. If a source page and a family datasheet disagree, request an exact model confirmation before ordering.

Treat handover as a deliverable.

Agree who owns the installation and who keeps the commissioning information. Record room names, device locations, recovery steps and the supported wall-switch behaviour. Plan how a replacement device will be commissioned later. Avoid leaving the entire installation attached to a contractor’s personal account.
